B-52 Maintenance Training
Under contract to the U.S. Air Force B-52 System Program Office (SPO), Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is upgrading the hardware and software for the B-52 Bomb Navigation System Maintenance Trainers and the Electro-optical Viewing System Maintenance Trainers. The BNSMTs and EVSMTs are employed at Sheppard AFB to provide hands-on maintenance procedures training for the B-52 Offensive Avionics System. The current BNSMT configuration consists of several aircraft avionics computer systems, displays, control panels, and a Simulation Computer System (SCS). The SCS enables instructor insertion of simulated avionics system faults and provides a limited simulation of the aircraft's Inertial Navigation System. The current SCS is based on a customized 1970s-era DEC PDP-11 computer that is no longer maintainable. SwRI is replacing the existing SCS with a commercial off-the-shelf PC-based system that provides enhanced simulation capabilities, instructor control, and a graphical user interface. At the direction of the B-52 SPO, SwRI is evaluating additional modifications and upgrades to the BNSMT.
In conjunction with the BNSMT modifications, SwRI is also replacing the Modified Advanced Capability Radar configuration in one of the EVSMTs with the Strategic Radar (SR) AN/APQ-166 subsystem. The SR modification includes replacing the Terrain Display Control Panel, Indicator Light Assembly, Simulated Operating Condition Indicator Panel, Trainer Power Switch, Emergency Power Off Switch, and associated panels, wiring harnesses, and connectors
