Cathodic Protection (CP) in combination with coating is widely used to protect buried steel structures from external corrosion. SwRI uses advanced analytical approaches to design and analyze CP systems. Technical approaches are based on sound scientific principles and advanced computational methods to design and analyze CP for complex systems. These approaches can account for a multitude of factors, such as variation of soil properties, coating condition changes, variation in material characteristics, and presence of dissimilar metals in close proximity to each other, etc.
SwRI scientists and engineers can provide CP-related services in multiple areas. Following is a brief list of CP-related topics where SwRI staff has prior experience in serving various clients:
- Cased Pipeline Corrosion Model
- Cathodic protection system design and evaluation for pipelines and aboveground storage tanks
- Cathodic protection system design and trouble-shooting in congested areas
- Cathodic protection current distribution assessments for multiple pipelines in a right of way
- Alternating current and stray current-induced pipeline corrosion
- Casing corrosion assessment
- Coating performance assessment
- Stress corrosion cracking of pipelines
- Above-ground potential survey assessments
- Design and analysis of cathodic protection coupons
