In late 2023, the Supercritical Transformational Electric Power (STEP) Demo pilot plant achieved mechanical completion, with all the major subsystems installed. In early 2024, SwRI fired the natural gas heater to operate the STEP turbine at 18,000 rpm during commissioning, an industry first for a facility of its kind.
