UTSA researchers captured videos of developing neurons, starting from induced pluripotent stem cells. SwRI used these timestamped images to train a U-Net algorithm to detect neuron somas and dendrites. The trained algorithm detected soma cells as well as closer views of a neural network showing somas (pink) and dendrite ends (blue, image A), ultimately creating nuclei and dendrite data to inform models (image B).
