Southwest Research Institute leads the Radiation Assessment Detector investigation for the Mars Science Laboratory, the next rover mission to the Red Planet, scheduled to launch November 26, 2011. RAD will measure fluxes of solar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays on the planet's surface, providing data needed to characterize the Martian radiation environment to assess past and present habitability and to prepare for future human exploration.
