Stern has flown numerous research missions in NASA high performance WB-57s and F-18s, trained in centrifuges, in zero-G, and in F-104 high performance aircraft. He was a shuttle mission specialist candidate who has passed NASA astronaut flight physicals, and has done research at the South Pole. He is an instrument-rated commercial pilot and flight instructor. Stern has two daughters and a son.
