Damaged pistons are just one of several potential failure modes from engines that exhibit low-speed preignition, or LSPI. Southwest Research Institute will launch a new consortium in January 2011 to investigate the interactions of fuels and lubricants to better understand what physical and chemical properties play a role in LSPI, a condition that causes heavy engine knock and can seriously damage engine parts or cause complete engine failure.
