Using data from the New Horizons Alice spectrograph, Southwest Research Institute scientists created this figure to map Jovian auroral electron energy, using the UV color ratio, as it varies across the night side of Jupiter. The highest energy particles in the northern auroral oval are found just after sunset on Jupiter (left side of the second scan from the top) and then decline in energy all night until dawn. These results were surprising, the opposite of what scientists expected based on studies of Jupiter’s dayside.
