A spring-loaded coring tool on the DEPTHX telescoping probe arm gathers samples of surface algae from a rock in the La Pilita sinkhole in Mexico. The sample collector and the probe arm are two of several features Southwest Research Institute developed for the deep-diving autonomous vehicle, which was built for NASA by Stone Aerospace.
