“Sustainable Strategies for Unconventional Feedstock Valorization,” Eloy Flores

Southwest Research Institute’s integrated infrastructure allows continuous process development of novel systems for high-pressure/conventional fluidized bed reactors, fluid catalytic cracking and hydrotreating while exploring their practical use. We offer a range of solutions from small-scale laboratory experiments to larger pilot plant processes, efficiently converting both renewable and petrochemical feedstocks into valuable end products. SwRI is currently working with the city of San Antonio on processes to convert municipal solid waste into fuels, agro-industrial waste into fuel precursors and captured carbon biochar, and plant oil and animal fats into bio-gasoline. Moreover, SwRI also has pilot hydrotreaters to refine biocrude feedstock to spec fuels like renewable diesel, gasoline and sustainable aviation fuel. SwRI will cover different engineering strategies to utilize biomass, plastics and bio-oils, with the goal of creating renewable chemicals and fuels through process improvements and scale-up.
