Southwest Research Institute will participate in the 78th Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers (STLE) Annual Meeting at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minn. STLE's Annual Meeting & Exhibition is the industry's most respected venue for technical information, professional development and networking opportunities.
SwRI tribologists will lead several courses, panels and presentations, including:
Sunday, May 19
Electric Vehicles 101 (8 a.m.-5 p.m., Room 200 I) – Dr. Carlos Sanchez, Tribology Research and Evaluations Section lead engineer, will chair a course that introduces hardware, tribology, lubrication, thermal management and testing related to electric vehicles. Dr. Peter Lee, Institute Engineer with the Tribology Research and Evaluations Section in the Fuels and Lubricants Division, will provide an overview of hybrid full electric and fuel cell vehicles, and their hardware and drive units.
Monday, May 20
STLE Sustainability Forum (5-6 p.m., Seasons Room) – Dr. Lee, who was named an STLE Fellow in 2023, will take part in the STLE Sustainability Forum in a panel discussion about sustainability challenges and progress in their respective areas of expertise.
Wednesday, May 22
Auto/Diesel, Gasoline, Hydrogen and Ammonia (8 a.m.-5 p.m., Room 200 J) – Dr. Lee helped organize a course as chair, providing an overview of the engine and drivetrain systems and lubrication requirements for different internal combustion engines and drivelines. The course also covers different aspects of lubrication, wear and fuel requirements for engines. Lee will also provide an overview of the engine and transmission hardware, while Khaled Rais, Fuels and Lubricants Research senior research engineer, will teach the engine oil testing portion.
Advanced Lubrication 302 (8 a.m.-5 p.m., Room 200F) – Dr. Lee will discuss failure analysis.
Thursday, May 23
Electric Vehicles 202 (8 a.m.-5 p.m., Room 200 FG) – Dr. Sanchez organized an introduction to electric vehicle lubrication and testing course. It will introduce various hardware, lubrication, and testing related to EVs, and it includes an overview of different EV power systems, the different driveline systems, and lubricant, tribology and thermal management requirements and challenges unique to EVs.
