Forensic microbiology uses cutting-edge technology and expertise to address the threat of dangerous pathogens. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has designed and developed test-bed platforms for efficacy evaluations, device performance validation, detection, and decontamination studies in our forensic microbiology laboratory. Nonpathogenic simulants are used for pathogen studies, such as fowlpox to simulate Variola major and Bacillus thuringiensis to represent Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), to evaluate both pro-active source eliminations and post-event scenarios. In addition to decontamination, agent attribution and detection in the environment continues to be a program area focus.
