Controlled Release Society inducts SwRI’s Dr. James Oxley into College of Fellows

July 30, 2024 — Dr. James Oxley, an Institute scientist at Southwest Research Institute’s Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Division, has been named a Fellow by the Controlled Release Society. Recognized for excellence and innovation in delivery science, Oxley is an expert in microencapsulation, nanoencapsulation and other controlled-release technologies used in energy, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and consumer product applications.

“I’m honored and humbled by this recognition,” said Oxley, who began his Institute career in 2004. “Encapsulation research started at Southwest Research Institute in 1949, so I was fortunate to join a well-established program. I’ve been able to help carry on the Institute’s legacy in the field of controlled release and microencapsulation.”

The breadth of Oxley’s work includes assisting more than 200 clients, managing over 300 diverse microencapsulation projects and introducing more than 1,000 workshop participants to microencapsulation.

Oxley’s research has appeared in numerous scientific journals and publications. He also regularly speaks at conferences and industry events worldwide.

“Over the last 20 years, Jamie has been critical in growing the capabilities and reputation of SwRI as a leader in controlled release technologies,” said Joseph Persyn, senior manager of SwRI’s Microencapsulation Section. “He is internationally recognized for developing a range of controlled release techniques for applications including for solar energy storage, drug delivery and stabilization of heat- and oxygen-sensitive ingredients to combat malnutrition in developing countries.”

Oxley’s research has developed novel formulations, materials and encapsulation techniques such as drying oils that have resulted in eight patents.

“Jamie provides novel scientific solutions to client problems across many scientific domains, such as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, veterinary, agriculture and oil and gas, to name but a few,” said Darrel W. Johnston, SwRI’s director of Pharmaceuticals and Bioengineering.

Oxley has served CRS in many capacities, including as director at large from 2014 to 2017 and secretary of the board from 2017 to 2018. He’s currently on the steering committee for the Bioencapsulation Research Group.

“SwRI has been researching and developing encapsulation and nanoencapsulation for more than 70 years. When Dr. Oxley joined the Institute 20 years ago, he greatly expanded our capability set,” said SwRI Vice President Dr. Joe McDonough.

Oxley’s honor was recognized at the opening ceremony of the CRS 2024 annual meeting and exposition in Bolonga, Italy, on July 8.

He will host SwRI’s Introduction to Microencapsulation workshop November 11-13 at the Institute’s headquarters in San Antonio.
