Slug Flow Characterization
Advanced science. Applied technology.
SwRI has been conducting research in multiphase flow and wet gas metering since 1997. We have tested nearly every commercially available multiphase/wet gas flow meter on the market and a number of other technologies in the developmental stage. Our unique high pressure facilities offer field-realistic testing accompanied by accurate reference measurements with quantified uncertainty. Projects in this area include:

Efforts in multiphase flow characterization and modeling focus on investigating and characterizing the behavior and phase distribution of multiphase flow under a wide spectrum of operating conditions ranging from near atmospheric pressure and ambient temperatures in air/water systems, to more realistic conditions involving high pressures (e.g., 3,600 psi), high-viscosity, and hydrocarbon fluids.
This area also encompasses the development of correlations, mechanistic models, and the use of computational fluid dynamics in modeling multiphase flows in a variety of applications.
