Through cell cultivation, scientists can develop biological products, or biologics, that can be designed to target specific diseases or repair injuries. Bioreactors enable the production of proteins and other biologics using various types of cells. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) offers cell culture bioreactor research and development to the academic, commercial and government sectors. We perform these Biologics Manufacturing Services at our FDA-inspected facilities in San Antonio, Texas.

Single-use Bioreactor

SwRI’s 3D-printed, single-use bioreactors to support large-molecule drug development.
SwRI developed a novel 3D-printed, scalable bioreactor through internal research. This single-use bioreactor offers a low-shear, monolayer cell culture environment with high mass transfer capability, enabling in-line monitoring, automated control and closed biomanufacturing of cells and biologics. The three-dimensional (3D) bioreactor relies on an open-cell interconnected porous network with cell culture medium circulation to deliver oxygen and nutrients to cells that reside in the network, which resembles tissue beds with a blood circulation system.
Applications & Services

SwRI’s 3D-printed, single-use bioreactors to support large-molecule drug development.
We specialize in biomanufacturing platforms for stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR T-cell) expansion and exosome, viral vector productions and continuous manufacturing systems. We provide bioreactor automation, scale-up and intensification, along with chromatography and formulation for both upstream and downstream process development.
