- Background , SwRI cybersecurity researchers have demonstrated that Level 1 and Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers can be disrupted using a “Machine in the Middle” (MitM) attack. Newer EV charging standards have introduced Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC), a faster version of the Level 1 and 2 charging. DCFC uses Power-Line Communication (PLC), potentially introducing additional cybersecurity concerns.…, Approach , Figure 1: DCFC charging with vehicle. Figure 1: DCFC charging with vehicle. This project’s goal was to analyze the PLC communication of the DCFC Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) to identify vulnerabilities, create potential exploits, and develop methods to mitigate these risks. The testers approached the first part of the goal by capturing and analyzing PLC data to understand the…, Accomplishments , An MitM hardware setup has been created between the DCFC charger and the vehicle, which includes being able to spoof a vehicle connected to the EVSE as well as spoof an EVSE connected to the EV. This MitM setup allows for the collection of PLC packets converted to Ethernet packets, which in turn has allowed for analyzing the data. Research on other projects that utilized the PLC protocol has also…Type: IRD Synopsis
- Background , The Robot Operating System (ROS)-Industrial Consortium mission is to bring the power and capabilities of ROS to advanced industrial applications. Discussions with industry collaborators frequently identify “ease of use” as one of the biggest challenges to the wider adoption of ROS software. Based on this feedback, SwRI developed an application to combine many commonly used ROS tools and…Type: IRD Synopsis

- Background , This LAMP research project explores the potential of configuring a SharePoint document library of SwRI’s corpus of internal research (IR) reports to serve as a Retrieval-Augmented-Generation (RAG) source for a Large Language Model (LLM) database assistant. The project was established to allow users to engage with and leverage SwRI’s proprietary IR archive to generate accurate, domain-specific…, Approach , A subset of IR reports was selected from the report archive, representing known topical subjects within a labeled dataset for response validation. Controlled metadata fields were established to standardize key prompt entry points. The project leveraged a framework for integrating an LLM with external data sources and Python to build, test, and deploy a RAG model. The methodology involved…, Accomplishments , The custom-configured RAG model has successfully enabled the LLM to deliver accurate responses, concise report summaries, and dynamic user engagement. This project, using a SharePoint document library as a RAG source, can be extended to other business areas by applying the same technology to sensitive or extensive document libraries enabling broader access, streamlined insights, and deeper…Type: IRD Synopsis
